Microneedling is a cosmetic treatment that uses tiny needles on a handheld device to make controlled micro-channels (tiny holes) in the skin. These punctures force the skin to react by stimulating collagen and elastin production to heal the micro wound. The collagen adds volume to the skin, while the elastin helps heal the skin.
At Plaza Aesthetics, we use SkinPen, the first FDA-cleared microneedling device.
How Mircroneedling Works
Microneedling is a non-invasive treatment that uses very short and fine needles to create microscopic damage to the outer layers of the skin.
By precisely controlling the depth, spacing, frequency, and pattern of these needle pricks, the SkinPen stimulates the skin to produce more collagen. Microneedling helps minimize the appearance of fine lines, freckles, sun spots, scars, burns, pitted and non-pitted acne scars, stretch marks, and large pores.
The goal of treatment is to kickstart the skin’s healing mechanisms and produce collagen for more youthful-looking and rejuvenated skin
Benefits of Microneedling
Compared to other facial treatments, microneedling offers the following benefits:
- No scarring
- No risk of adverse reaction
- Safe for all skin types
- Little to no downtime or recovery
- Little to no discomfort or pain
- Effectively treats many skin imperfections

Microneedling vs. Home Rollers
Home rollers don’t produce very deep skin puncture wounds. For this reason, the results of treatment with home rollers won’t be as evident as the results of treatment with microneedling.
Professional microneedling is designed to induce skin rejuvenation and deliver long-term results. Though home rollers may temporarily brighten skin, clients should consider microneedling with the SkinPen for deeper treatment.
Who is a Candidate For Microneedling?
Microneedling is ideal for clients struggling with acne scars, sun damage, fine lines or wrinkles, and other skin imperfections, such as:
- Uneven skin tone
- Rough skin texture
- Large pores
- Under eye dark circles or puffiness
- Reduced skin elasticity
Microneedling is not recommended for clients who:
- Are pregnant
- Have psoriasis or eczema
- Have open wounds
- Have had radiation therapy recently
- Have a history of skin scars
Before Treatment
To prepare for treatment, clients need to avoid retinoid treatments and treatments for auto-immune diseases for 24 hours prior to the procedure. Clients also need to avoid direct sun exposure.
Before coming in for treatment, clients should wash their face and come in without any makeup.
How Long Does Treatment Take?
The entire microneedling procedure can take about 30 minutes to perform, with most clients temporarily experiencing slight swelling and redness as side effects.
After treatment, clients’ skin will be more sensitive to the sun and they will be encouraged to wear sunscreen. Clients are free to go back to work or school after the procedure, and may apply makeup to cover skin redness.
How Long Do Results Last?
Treatment results will depend on the amount of excess fat, skin laxity, and skin type. Most clients will need multiple microneedling treatments to see lasting results.
Can Microneedling Be Combined With Other Treatments?
Clients may obtain other treatments during a session of microneedling. A Plaza Aesthetics skin professional will discuss appropriate complementary treatments during the consultation.
